Canal Cruising Guide
Fires
A fire of sufficient severity to require evacuation is highly unlikely. If it does happen:
- Go to the end of the boat you can get to without being toasted
- Do not jump in the canal; that would make things much worse
- Wait for the captain to bring that end of the boat in contact with the bank
- Get off calmly
- Do not stop to pick up any personal belongings; do not pass Go; do not collect £200
Falling In
If someone falls in to the canal, either off the boat or at a lock:
- Make it obvious to everyone, including the captain of the boat, what has happened ("Man Overboard!" is traditional)
- If at a lock, immediately close all paddles
- Do not jump in after them
If you fall in:
- The most dangerous thing to you in a canal is the boat; if it's moving, get away from it
- Try and stand up; most canals are very shallow
- Wade or swim to the bank
Falling in is unlikely. The last time someone fell in, a couple of years ago, it was a leader! (And the boat was moored at the time.)
Other Unlikely Events
If aliens invade the earth, don't worry. They'll probably attack the cities first, so we'll have a couple of days to continue enjoying the good weather and beautiful countryside before they come for us.
